LIZZIE BORDEN HASH & REHASH

“The film is an original yet accessible work that will not only delight its viewers but teach them about several important humanities themes.”

  - Jean -Christophe Agnew, Prof., American Studies, Yale University

Why has the image of Lizzie Borden captured the imaginations of so many generations of women? Each generation remakes the myth, fitting it to the changing anxieties and awareness of the times. Today’s women cast Lizzie as a feminist heroine, overthrowing patriarchy with her forty whacks.

In this sardonic and original film an assortment of people, from a forensic scientist to a rock star, find vastly different meaning in the infamous case. Was Lizzie perhaps an incest victim fighting back? Was she a lesbian? What does the case tell us about class, gender and family in industrial America? As well as providing a lively retelling of the ever-popular story of Lizzie Borden, this film also raises complex deeper issues relating to social history, women’s studies, and popular culture.

Dr. Dorothy Lewis is a professor of psychiatry at Yale University and New York Bellevue Hospital, known for her pioneering research on the cause of violence. Her theories about violence are based on human stories and brain research that focuses on head injuries, brain damage and child abuse.

The program follows Dr. Lewis through the murder cases of Arthur Shawcross and Terrance Wainwright.

The psychiatrist for the prosecution is Dr. Park Dietz, Dr. Lewis’s archivist, who has provided testimony opposing Lewis’s views in a number of trials.

BANDIT

Bandit, an alleged pit bull from Stanford, CT, was sentenced to death for biting. After a long legal battle, a Superior Court judge issued a 90-day stay of execution, giving an old dog one last chance to learn new tricks under the tutelage of dog trainer / philosopher Vicki Hearne.

A Little Vicious tells the story of this reprieve, and its ironic outcome. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short in 1991.

DOC

Scientist, novelist, activist, inventor, filmmaker, architect,     prophet, healer, and madman Harold L. ‘Doc’ Humes was, by all accounts, an exhilarating, infuriating and terrifyingly brilliant man.

His Oscar-nominated documentarian daughter Immy Humes has gathered testimonials from luminaries including Norman Mailer, William Styron and Timothy Leary… Fascinating, wryly distanced documentary.

Casual footage from the era captures the excitement of liberation and the headiness of artistic ferment…Immy imaginatively segues from unexpected angles, mapping out the complex historical, cultural and personal synapses that link the man to his times..
